CHAPTER EIGHT

“I NEED TO get going,” Jack said abruptly, as Victoria reentered the room with Mary. The child had two suckers in her hand, one yellow, one red, and the doll in the other. “Ready to go?” he asked her.

Victoria went over to him and waited. He nodded to Mary, then looked at Rain. She was looking at him oddly, as if she knew something about him that even he didn’t know.

“I’ll bring her tomorrow, if that’s all right?”

“That’s perfect,” Mary said. “Just wonderful.”

“See you tomorrow,” Rain said to Victoria, then looked at Jack. “I’ll be here.”

He started to leave, feeling as though he were escaping something he didn’t understand or want to. And it didn’t leave even when he was in the company car and heading away from LynTech. He’d thought of stopping to eat on the way home, but Victoria’s outburst that morning had him telling the driver to go directly to the loft.

Two hours later, Victoria was in her nightgown, watching cartoons on the television, the cat watching her warily from his perch on the half wall, and Jack was at the computer. The three of them in the same space and all separate, Jack thought as he frowned at the figures on the computer screen. Not exactly a homey feeling.

The phone rang and he reached for it. “Hello?”

“Jack, it’s Zane. I was going to try to get back to you this afternoon after the meeting, but Lindsey had a doctor’s appointment and things got lost in the shuffle.”

“What’s going on?”

“I’ve decided, and Matt agrees, to lay our cards on the table with Sommers, tell him the truth and if he goes for it, he goes for it. If he doesn’t, we back out and let it go.”

“And then?”

“We move on, find out how the information got out, and start looking at other options.”

All this was for nothing? “Just walk away?”

“If the rest of the board agrees to it.”

“Bad idea,” Jack said.

“How so?”

“It shows weakness, indecisiveness. You name it.”

“So, we ram it through and push Sommers to fall in step?”

Jack couldn’t imagine pushing E. J. Sommers to do anything he didn’t want to do. “We make another offer, dress it up a bit, and stand behind it, then make sure it isn’t undermined.”

“Sounds good, but how do you plan on doing that?”

“We’ll work it out.”

“If we let it go, Jack, you can walk now. You can go back to London.”

Was that a bribe? A way to make him agree? “I won’t be here much longer than another week anyway.” He couldn’t believe he wasn’t grasping at the escape. “How about it? Stick it out?”

There was silence, then Zane said, “Okay. We’ll figure out another deal, then tackle Sommers from a different angle.”

“If he’s not off somewhere having a good time.”

“That’s a problem. I don’t know how he gets anything done the way he lives. Oh, speaking of living. I’m not going to be in tomorrow. Lindsey needs me at some classes she’s going to take.”

“I thought she was sick?”

“That’s what I thought, but she’s sure she can do this.
